I am not gonna argue that pits don't have something inherently wrong in their DNA that makes them more susceptible for attacks (but I imagine other breeds do too). But I am almost convinced that they just happen to be the breed of choice for trash a-hole (trasholes?) classes of people who are terrible dog owners, and that's the main reason their attacks are so prevalent.
If trashy people loved chihuahuas, for example, I bet we'd see a lot more chihuahua attacks happening because they would be owned by the same idiot dogowners.
It is a vicious cycle. Pit bulls are probably a bit more predisposed to aggressiveness than other breeds, but that is amplified significantly by the fact they are the preferred breed of trashy owners who DESIRE that aggressiveness. As such, they foster it. The more they breed, the more owners there are who get such dogs and the cycle continues.

Maybe not THAT far. But you are right. German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, even Dalmatians could EASILY take the place of pit bulls if they were the preferred breed of trashy people

A pit bull bred to breed standard lacks human aggression. They do have animal aggression which requires heavy socializing.

Pretty much true. In countries like Germany you have strict protocols on breeding dogs. The dogs have to pass a temperant test in order to be bred. I'm not a big government guy but thats something we may need to look into.
The consequeneces of having idiots and outright trashy people from the hood and trailer parks unethically breeding pits is shown all the time. They are not breeding to the standard and often undesirable traits get passed around. To add gasoline to the fire, those people treat those dogs like a puppy mill and overproduce.
Take all that and put it in a breed just large enough to do real damage and you have a recipe for a disaster.
What I see with pit bulls worries me considering those same people will no doubt move on to other breeds and some of those breeds do have natural human aggression like my beloved Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepards.
And if anyone thinks the press won't be reporting attacks from Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepards with the same zeal they do pit bulls have not been paying attention to the last 50 years.
