Had a similar encounter in Playa del Carmen (south of Cancun) in the mid '90s.
The concierge at the resort we were staying at told us about it, that the resort was giving away $1,000(US) vouchers to folks who would sit through the spiel.
We did, it was less than two hours total right south of the ferry landing in Carmen.
I used the voucher to pay for almost all of our stay at the resort we were at, they refunded my Credit Card $1,000.
Never again.
