I have no idea how low income and middle income people make it there. I considered myself lower middle income when I was there.

I understand they commute but I wasnt saving a ton of money even though I wasn’t technically check to check for the most part. Made 85-110K. I was there- trying to keep up with the lifestyle of late 20/early 30 go getters.

Listen man.

I understand.

DC is definitely an expensive place to live.

And if you try to live like you're in the upper crest top 1% person it is indeed unaffordable.

But if you're in your late 20s and early 30s trying to live like that then that is more on you trying to live a lifestyle you can't afford when you don't have to.

There is no reason someone making that salary - or even less - can't live fairly comfortable and enjoy themselves in DC as so many do now (myself included).

If you were in your late 20s trying to roll with the wealthiest and oldest citizens of this city even if you couldn't afford it... well that's your own financial irresponsibility man.

ETA: As some have mentioned - I'm a single man so it is just fine and super convenient to be able to walk/metro anywhere. Having a family is a completely different equation.
