Its worse than that. Fans and the Media actively encourage players to give up on their teammates and coaches in pursuit of self.

I'm not going to run a dude down for sitting out a bowl, because I understand, but I will never celebrate that shite.

His message rings true.
At the end of the day, fans drive all the money that comes into the league. Turn off the fans and it all goes away.
All sports leagues are in a delicate situation where fans have gotten out of the habit of going to the games.
