I was looking at doing a similar trip this fall, but COVID. I think that rather than staying in cities and doing day trips, you should look at doing a road trip or a loop and spending each or every other night in different places. My plan was to fly to Boston, drive up the Maine coast then up to North Conway and Lincoln and then completing the loop (or at least part of it) on the Kancamungus Hwy. (the Kanc). That loop can be done either way.

I was thinking of maybe going up to Mt. Washington, then down Bear Notch Rd to the Kanc and over to Lincoln. There are smaller places to stay outside of Lincoln.

You really can't go wrong in Maine
Before you get to Portland stop at some of the coastal towns like York (Nubble Lighthouse), Marginal Walk Way (Ogunquit) eat at Barnacle Billy's, Kennebunkport (hit up Mabel's and Nunan Lobster Hut). Old Orchard Beach is neat as well, kind of a boardwalk type vibe with the pizza and french fry stands. Before Portland you can do both Cape Elizabeth lighthouse and Portland Head Light. Freeport is close to Portland as well with some neat areas plus the LL Bean outlet.

Once you get up into Vermont or New Hampshire I can't help you there, haven't made it that far yet. It's on the list next time we go.
