It probably needed to be as long as Return of the King, and there are some fantastic fan edits that make it such. They’re basically perfect. The only part you’d be confused about is why Smaug is covered in molten gold when he busts out of the Lonely Mountain. I highly encourage you to find one, since if that edit was the film it would have also been nominated for Best Picture.

I never got why Jackson felt the need to include the worms from DUNE in the Battle of the 5 Armies, then never used them again.
