But I thought we shouldn't make decisions that might impact someone else's life.
It's your loved one, the one you made the decision with.

Now you've got an elderly loved one that is in need of care at home with family that can't provide that care, would spend a fortune trying to pay for that care, or would be forced to stay home from work to provide that care.
Is this the same family that wants to bring disease into a nursing home because the elderly person has had enough?

Imagine two families with a loved one in the same nursing home. They would both obviously like to visit, but one would prefer to hold off a while longer and maybe get a couple more years, while for the other family it's "now or never". Knowing how it rips through nursing homes, how can you let one family put the others at risk?

There is no getting around that preventing visitors from seeing the elderly in a nursing home is cruel.
Is it not equally or more cruel to be so irresponsible to the rest of the residents who might prefer to not be exposed?

12/2 LDH Nursing Home Report

The virus is still being brought into nursing homes despite the fact they have been closed since 3/12

The residents are not really allowed out of their rooms, they have no interaction with other residents, they eat alone in their rooms, not sure how it could spread from one resident to another

What happens when someone with a mild case of the flu goes into a nursing home & gives it to the residents?

The frick are you talking about here? Now we know for the fact that the family that wants to visit their loved one is infected and is intentionally going to spread it?

If masks and temperature checks work, why can't we let them in with precautions? Hmmm.....

And, as you've already said, can't you move your family member out of a place if you don't like the visitation policy, in your hypothetical?

So, it's perfectly fine to let the "now or never" resident die alone without allowing the family to be there?

It's still a 90% survival rate for those over 70, ain't it?

No, they are exposed anyway because the staff goes home and lives in the world. Or else we wouldn't still have cases in the nursing homes.

Preventing visitation is an intentional choice, the other is a bunch of maybes and ifs.
