Make sure you have all your licenses in order. You need basic hunting and big game. Big game license is what includes your deer tags.

If the area you're hunting is only open for archery or primitive weapons season, you need either the archery or primitive weapon license too. Don't need either of those if the regular gun season is open though.

If you're hunting public land, you need a separate permit for most public land in the state. For state owned Wildlife Management Areas, you need to buy a WMA permit when you're getting your hunting licenses. WMA permit is valid for all WMA's in the state. If you're hunting federal land, you'd need to check the regulations for that particular refuge. Most of the federal NWR's have their own permit that you print out online for free and just have to sign and keep on your person, but some have a fee.
