My advice? Go rescue another.
we've adopted a couple of older dogs that we've only had a few years with and it's tough to see them go.
But, I always feel just a little better that at least I was able to help them through their last, typically more difficult years.

I still have the other one. Had him for 12 years. He will be 15 in a couple of weeks.

He never cottoned to having another one, even of his own breed. He made a point to go eat his dog food when he didn't come home with me. Then started pulling out Max's toys and started playing with them. He got more frisky for the next few weeks. He loves having it all to himself again.

I'm kind of looking at this route as well - my last one was a German Shepherd and I think they are the best breed for my tastes - they just form such close connections although they definitely take a firm hand from early on for training and all. But I'd love to rescue one that had a former owner who didn't quite realize what they were getting in to. It happens a lot with the larger and more aggressive breeds.
