Some of those prices are believable, but who buys an athletic cup, used earrings, perfume that god knows how old it is, broken watches from a stranger’s used garage sale finds for those prices?

$51 for an old jock strap.

I always overestimate people’s intelligence.

Mostly idiots on eBay.

The jockstrap for $51 alone proves that an idiot and his money are easily separated.

The jockstrap was kind of a joke for my threads here, when I bought it.

The earring are 14k gold

The “broken” bag of watches had some very nice watches in it, that just needed wound. One watch was a Gruen, that sold for $50.

The perfume, I don’t know. I bought it because it was Chanel and only $1

What I want to know is your profit margin overall... These are some substantial highlights, but you have a lot of losses too.

Also, where and how do you store all of this stuff interim? Especially the excess loss items.

It seems that you have an overall profit ratio, but it also seems that only about 15% of your items are making the gig worth it.

I have very few loses (or misses). 95% of my misses come from things I paid next to nothing for (a dollar or two). I get home, realize it’s junk and I throw it away. The intermediate items that I miss on (paid $5-$20 for), I rarely lose money on. I can sell it and get my money back, and make a few dollars (double my money tops).

As far as storage, I really don’t have much stuff because I deal mostly in smalls. Everything I have are in 4-5 storage totes in my storeroom in the garage (except the tiny things like jewelry, they are in my office).

My strategy is to make at least one purchase every trip to at least make my money back that I spent that day, and that leaves me all profit from everything else I bought.
For example, today was a slow day. I only spent $33 on five or six items. One item was a Muracci bat, that I sold within an hour of getting home for $50. Everything else is profit. I don’t buy junk. Now I have a N64 system with games, a brand new (still in box) workout punching bag with gloves, a coffee mug, and a box of harmonicas (a couple other things, I forget) that didn’t cost me a thing.
Only money I really risk is on odd ball things like the jockstrap, those weird trolls, etc, and I only pay a dollar or two for stuff like that.

I've been doing what he is doing for about a year now. Looking at his pics, we don't deal with a lot of the same stuff, but there is some overlap.

I have had a lot of good luck with electronics--current and vintage. And lots of other random shite.

But our philosophies are the same in that we don't spend a lot of money on single items. The most I've spent on any one item is probably $100, but it was a nice sewing machine that I knew I could sell quickly and for a good profit...and I did sell it later that day on Ebay for $250.

So I say that to say this. I track my purchases and sales on a spreadsheet. My profit margin runs close to 70% overall. Given that, plus the fact that I don't sink much money into any one item, I can afford to miss on a few items and still turn a handsome overall profit.

I honestly have gotten pretty good at knowing what to buy and what to pass on.

Antique has said that he looks for "unicorns", so our philosophy is different there. I'm pretty efficient (and content) with buying things for $15-20 and selling them for $50-60. Or buying things for $25 amd selling them for $80-90.

Years back I started buying anything and everything I could make money on. My hobby turned into a small business and was no longer fun, so I quit for a while. When I started back doing it a few years ago, that’s when I decided to go for only homeruns and unicorns.

How much does shipping cut into those margins? I sold some things recently on ebay and the shipping was nearly as much as my profit was which was insane to me. Sold a polo and three shipping (3 day with tracking number) was like $12 or so. If you operate as a business on Ebay, do you get lower shipping rates or something?

I can honestly say that my biggest lose in the last year was $8 on a Mickey Mouse Christmas train. I forgot to look in the battery compartment before buying it. I get it home and find four corroded batteries. I clean it the best that I can, put new batteries in it, nothing. It didn’t work. I gave it to my neighbor, who is going to gut the engine so it will roll freely, and let his kid play with it. It was a complete set with cars and track, just the engine didn’t work.

Nothing, the buyer pays the shipping. And I over charge shipping because of packaging (which can get expensive quick). That’s another reason I deal mainly in smalls, easy and cheap to mail.

Gotcha. Yeah not sure if the box is what I got overcharged for or if the shipping rates had gone up with Covid or something but I was discouraged to sell anything else at the time because I nearly ended up losing money on the whole deal because of it.

Do people really pay a blatant overcharge for shipping though? If I bought a $15 dollar shirt and someone charged me $15 to ship, I couldn't wrap my head around people willingly doing that consistently. I know I went wrong immediately when I chose the free shipping option as the seller lol
