LSU has never finished with the No. 1 class in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, but a big two weeks on the recruiting trail has Ed Orgeron and his staff in striking distance.
After securing pledges from the top two safeties in the country - Sage Ryan two Saturdays ago and Derrick Davis this past Saturday - the Tigers moved up one spot past Oregon into the No. 3 position of the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings, their highest ranking yet this cycle. The Tigers have a class score of 291.04, which narrows the margin between Alabama (310.25) and Ohio State (304.22).
Consider that Ryan nearly chose to play at Alabama before a late LSU rally and that Davis had Ohio State in his final three; these were significant recruitments in the race for No. 1.
Whether or not they get there, LSU does seem like a good bet for a third-straight top-five recruiting class after closing at No. 4 in 2020 and No. 5 in 2019.
It’s full steam ahead for the Orgeron & Co. for a handful of prospects at the point of attack. You have the two five-star defensive linemen in Korey Foreman and Maason Smith along with a five-star offensive lineman in Tristan Leigh. Top247 offensive tackle Savion Byrd is another coveted target for the defending National Champs.

I currently have them finishing with Leigh, Foreman, Thomas and Smith. But losing Carter (more of a 3-4 fit) and Hundley. Could add big time OG like Byrd or Foster but if not, finish at 24 with room for transfer.

Give me Foreman, Leigh, Smith, and another OL
Thomas Jr if he wants in but I think we’re ok without him if not
3 of the top 10 WRs and a guy like Bech who could be a WR/TE hybrid more than refills the cupboard

Even if we finish with Foreman, Smith and Leigh, Bama still has 3 spots to fill already well ahead of us, and OSU still has 2 5* projected commits. I don’t think we can finish any better than 3rd.
