It's as simple as this. He won national championships at Grand Valley State, won at Central Michigan, and got to BCS bowls at Cincinnati. Programs that weren't traditional winners.
I don't know if he'll ever win a national championship at ND, but given the current landscape of college football, I'm not sure anyone else would either.
