Shreveport once was home to United Gas a company that controlled more natural gas than any in the world. United was bought out in 1966 by much smaller Pennzoil and by the mid 70s all employees were moved to Houston. By the 80s the major oil companies moved out and by the end of 90s most of the independent operators moved or downsized. Shreveport former glory can be seen along Fairfield, but most of the surrounding areas are bad. Queensborough is a ghetto and the area around my grandmother's home across from the closed Shreveport Country Club is blighted. Cross Lake has frequent shootings at the parks and to be avoided.
It's sad and could have been avoided by proper management by city fathers who gave away the store.

I've always heard some story that Shreveport basically could have been Dallas with the oil industry but Louisiana and the city itself screwed the pooch. Not sure if its true of not though, but I feel like there has been a similar situation with South La and industry moving to Houston. Such a shame La always ruins itself.

quote:AT&T moving the phone production out of the country didn’t help either. We move to south S’port near Southwood HS in the ‘79; the phone plant was in that area, and it was an average middle class area. We were there about 10 years ago and it was bad. The mall, South Park, had to close due to gangs and a church had acquired it. We had moved out of state in ‘87 and were glad we did and didn’t own that house anymore.
The gigantic Western Electric plant in Shreveport was once one of the country's biggest producers of telephones.
