The entrance to the crawlspace is on the exterior wall of my bedroom. Right now the door is off the hinges and braced against the opening with cinder blocks. Best I can do is wedge it with about an inch of space exposed to outside.

I think the door has been off the hinges for a long time as the soil on the ground has raised so that the door technically doesn’t fit anymore. I’ve tried digging into the ground but the dirt is way too hard. The ground is also uneven with it sloping downward an inch or so from right to left.

The door is ~4 ft tall and about 3 ft wide. Now that we’re hitting colder temperatures, I’m reminded of just how much airflow is occurring through the door. My bedroom is really cold at night.

Anyways, what’s the best way to do this job so that the entrance is not only snug with the door but also insulated? I imagine it’s more difficult than an indoor door because there can’t be any space between the door and the ground/walls.

buy and install an exterior door there and cut it in half to 4ft, its not brain surgery so dont overthink it or try to reinvent the wheel

Don’t think insulation would make much of a difference. Don’t you have vents in other areas of the crawl space? I think my “door” is a piece of plywood reinforced by 2x4’s with some hinges
