Why does everyone hate the ending so much? What part exactly? Did I miss something?
It's one of the worst uses of the swelling, cheesy, triumphant scores that I can remember. Hayden reading the names isn't awful by itself, but Sorkin indulges his worst instincts during that scene. Cutting to the FBI agent looking sympathetic is... wtf. Continuing even at the very end to make the prosecutor a good guy is curious (there just never seemed to be a point). Playing that cheesy sports victory score while showing that Hoffman killed himself and Rubin got hit by a car is confusing emotional whiplash. I'm happy that the verdicts were overturned and I'm also happy that these guys are dead? That's certainly what the music tells me to feel. Finally, the ending hinges on Redmayne being good, and I just don't think he has it.

I guess I didn’t watch it closely enough. None of that really bothered me. I just figured Sorkin wanted to read names to remind what the entire story of the protest was all about - the deaths in Vietnam.
