You aren't kidding. Joe Namath was the 1st round overall draft pick and signed the richest pro football contract ever at that time: $427,000 over three years. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $3.5 million and just over a million a year. That's like "mediocre player just hoping to stay on a roster" pay these days, and he was the most well paid of his day.

Also, Joe Namath's net worth is in the $20 million range. He's doing commercials because they're paying him well to do them, not because he's hurting for cash.

That was the only reason why they had pre-season games, so they could get back in shape for the real season.
