If you think that was bad, you should see his attempt at a Southern/Cajun accent in JFK. That may have been the worst casting decision of all time.

I think Pesci was trying to do more of a Chicago accent (Casino was about guys from The Outfit, not the Five Families) and that came out in a few words. I mean, he already had a strong resemblance to Anythony Spilotro, but the Chicago accent is tough for non-natives. Frank Culotta was on set trying to help them with correct, Chicago Outfit jargon, but had no experience/skill as an actual dialogue or accent coach.
Deniro, for all of his chops as a method actor, didn't change much from his regular manner of speaking. He did try to mimic some of Lefty Rosenthal's mannerisms, but not speech so much.
