I feel the same way. There is just no way it can be as dangerous as these people make it out to be. I fish the terrebone bay 90% of the time I fish. I have gone out there in a 17' stratos bass boat in 2-3' chop and had to hug the bank. Not to mention the average depth in the terrebone bay is 3-4' with tons of bars. Ive kayaked in 2-3' seas in my hobies. Regardless of what these elitists think i will be prepared before I go, and it will be a glass calm day. Hell I don't like going out if the wind is over about 12mph its annoying.

Lol there is nothing elitist about it. No one is saying you need a 42ft freeman to go 5 miles offshore. We are just saying if you don’t know the area and have a small aluminum bay boat (which has minimal freeboard and low gunwhales) Venice isn’t really the beat/safest place to just send it. I’ve been fishing pretty regularly down there for the past 5 years or so and there’s still times it will get sketchy, and that’s in a 33ft boat. At the same time though, you’ll see several bay boats swordfishing 20+miles out on a calm day with no issues. I think the point we are all trying to get across is that you just need to ease into it, and not full send downriver to 109 in a 22ft aluminum bay boat.

Even the sea tow Capts tell people that are asking these same exact questions that you are asking, the same exact answers we are giving you. Hire a captain a few times and learn the area first. (which it sounds like you are going to do). He wouldn’t tell people this just because he wants to feel cool, considering he makes his money off of people doing what he says not to do.

No one will stop you at the dock and keep you from going. We are just giving you friendly advice based on our experiences. Learn the area and always use caution, which I’m sure any responsible person would do, and Venice is one of if not the best fishery in the northern hemisphere. Whether you listen to the advice or not is completely up to you.
