It seems like they got too far from the premise that he’s a sociopath with no human emotions.
I get this take. But I think it was part of his nature to try to conform, which was always there. He was taught to channel his nature into specificity but struggled with doing so.

Rita was the worst thing to happen to him because she gave him that human attention even though he was mostly faking it initially.

As others have stated well, it's when Clyde left, the show's writing and character perspectives slowly went off the rails.

I'm still on the record that S4 of Dexter was one of the best seasons in TV history - top whatever. And it's not even the ending with Rita. Lithgow was absolutely amazing and there's a moment earlier in the season that is mind-blowing of his character's manipulation. It still brings chills to me thinking about it.
