quote:He and Octavian hated each other. Antony was Caesar's heir apparent for years, but Caesar had banished him from Rome more than once for incompetence (he was apparently the laziest person in the world, though a great fighter) and may have been the one who got Caesar killed. Caesar also left everything to Octavian when he died.
Marc Antony, the most powerful man in Rome, traveled across the sea to frick her. He sacrificed his position, and relationship with Octavian for what ended up being a lover's suicide pact with Cleopatra.
They used each other to defeat Brutus and Cassius, but after they had gained control of Rome, it was only ever going to end one way. Yes, Antony was said to be in love with Cleopatra, but what he (and she as well) really wanted was to take control of Rome and leave it to Cleopatra and Caesar's son, Caesarian. He'd even written that into his will.

Caesar Augustus is one of the greatest leaders in human history. It's a shame HBO pulled the plug on Rome when they did. Octavian's full arc across four or five seasons would have been a sight to behold. Instead they had to rush the ending.
