Oh absolutely

And the inevitable “I was cleaning my guns and knocked the remote off my couch and it accidentally changed to Monday night football so I watched for a while - can’t believe these thugs celebrate sometimes. Can see why ratings are down 98%.”

Well in a thread about the NBA, I thin it's more relevant to discuss what the major leagues are doing to drive consumers away.

I think its completely relevant to ask what is driving consumers away from big events like the Derby as well though because it provides a different context

To pretend that it just happens to coincide with all major leagues taking a shite on the average white male is just kinda silly.

I've already stated that "wokeness" probably has something to do with it, but I also think its incredibly dishonest to not consider the massive drops in other sporting events that didn't have any wokeness and ask why

TV viewership is MUCH different than in 2010 across the board. That’s comparing apples to oranges.

quote:

You dont live in Cali but when isnt the local radio dominated by the Lakers during the season

The Dodgers in the playoffs are usually a huge deal.

You have the Dodgers in the playoffs and the Rams at 3-1. Despite that it’s still very much dominated by the Lakers.

Usually the Lakers in season would be during the beginning of the Dodgers season (nowhere near a pennant race) and during the Rams off season.

Normally at this time it’s mostly Dodgers and Rams. Lakers coverage and talk falls after the free agency period.

so the sociological explanation for the decline in sports ratings...is that there are too many sports to watch right now?

not sure if buy that, but i do think the tv ratings stuff is pretty interesting.

id be curious to know how many families have cut cable etc

I mean, the derby put out a pretty woke statement prior to the race. (not nearly as far as NBA of course)
quote:

In its statement, Churchill Downs came short of saying "Black lives matter," but challenged itself to be more inclusive. "We are committed to taking real, concrete action to address institutional roadblocks to progress and playing our part in advancing the changes America so desperately needs," it said

So why are we acting like wokeness wasn't an issue for them as well?

game 4 appears to be the highest rated NBA game? that is after Miami won game 3

im guessing more people will tune in if they think Lebron has a chance to lose, too

i can only imagine the ratings for a game 7 with Lebron facing another "hit to his legacy"

oh come on

are you really going to try and say that massive drop was because of that very mild statement?

As much as you're going to pretend they didn't do anything woke I guess.

I'd blame it more on it being Labor Day Weekend and people were out doing things though, but I find it interesting that the narrative that they were woke free is of course untrue.

A great many people think the "institutional roadblocks" line is a giant load of BS. Do you disagree?

Even if it's just mild, people are over it being crammed down their throats on what is supposed to be an escape. Surely you can agree with that

i thinks its foolish to act like there hasn't been people turning sports off because of this and that it hasn't had an impact

Its also foolish to act like ratings across the board for every sport being down is singularly, or at last largely, because of it

Almost every major sport is dealing with this. Have people turned it off and has that impacted? Sure. But there are multiple reasons and I have a feeling a couple of those are higher in impact

Millions of people decided not to watch horses run in a circle because of those two words

Seems legit

Which ones would be higher? I'm legit asking. The odd times one doesn't really hold water since the NFL is getting it too.

Sure.

Do you think that

1) a great many people even read or heard about that statement

and

2) were so offended by it that they decided to not watch the Derby?

Like I can somewhat understand people not wanting to see "BLM" and social justice name on the back of jerseys or players kneeling for the anthem, but if people are getting offended by mild statements like that, then we have truly reach peak fragility in this country.
