Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I kind of think it’s BS that more state and local government employees haven’t had to take furloughs. Tons of private companies have had to do it because of the shutdowns, and you can’t tell me that all of these government employees (with a few exceptions such as LDH) have maintained the same amount of workload throughout all of this.
LaToya might have fricked them royally by waiting until October, though - were government employees eligible for CARES Act unemployment benefits?
Also, by kicking the can down the road she effectively made sure all of these government services will suffer when demand DOES pick back up.

Its pretty interesting. I work for a private consulting company, helping clients navigate the federal school meal program (administered by the dept of education or dept of agriculture, depending on state).. and while things have changed drastically as far as operations go, they are continuing as scheduled with annual audits and things of that sort.
The individual schools answer to the state. The state answers to the feds (USDA). And so far, the feds have continued to push onwards with annual requirements and audits. I find it pretty interesting they haven't paused things of that nature when many schools aren't operating the regular lunch program right now, and some areas (like CA) are virtual for the foreseeable future.
I guess they're just afraid to compromise the integrity of the program (and encourage fraud) if the oversight system isn't in place for the year. But the cynic in me has thought to myself that they're really doing it so everyone still gets to work

Cut pay and lay off the dead wood in the city government. We are all in this together right?
Cutting pay and government jobs should be the new normal.

My company furloughed 90,000 workers for 2 months.
They eventually laid off between 15-25% of HQ staff and there are plans to reduce field teams by 25-30% over the next year or two.
"Non-essential" businesses got destroyed this spring and summer, and everyone in America should be pissed at state/local employees cashing full checks and bennies, many while performing zero job functions for services not rendered.
But there are always more taxpayers and more stones to bleed for government coffers. Zero accountability until the city goes bankrupt and then they'll just elect your cousin and keep the train moving.
