The Descent for me. That movie is terrifying even before the monsters show up.
I'll also shout out the original Evil Dead, which is one of those you had to be there movies. It didn't have a wide release and we saw it on a grainy, unmarked VHS tape. It was goddamn terrifying. It was like someone gave you The Ring tape in real life (a reference we couldn't make in the 1980s).
Evil Dead 2 is the same movie with more laughs and a bigger budget, so people try to remember the first Evil Dead as a horror comedy. It wasn't.
