Depends on the ammo, all other things equal. A 150gr .308 load will be about the same as a 140gr 6.5 load. Compare 180gr .308 to 125gr 6.5 and the .308 will be noticeably more stout if the rifles are light enough. Either should be easily manageable for a 14 year old, especially a big kid.
Years ago itd be a non-issue. Reduced recoil .308 loads were readily available but I'm sure that shite is impossible to find now. That combined with 6.5 creedmoor ammo seeming to be easy to find, the 6.5 is probably the better beginner choice. Shoot 140gr soft points for excellent deer smacking.
