Console Wars: Sega vs. Nintendo (CBS All Access)

Big new doc that just dropped on CBS All Access.
It chronicles the Nintendo's fight against Sega in the late 80s and 90s. Seth Rogan is a producer.
It's looks to be well done and has some great music, too. You can tell CBS spent some money on this.

Did you watch the Netflix documentary series? Game Over, I think? It hits on the sets stuff 1 episode
Oops. My bad. The doc is called High Score.

I'm a sucker for any video game doc. Problem is most of them have a budget of about $100. I tried watching the Power Glove doc on Amazon, but couldn't even finish it. It was really badly and cheaply done.

I was upset that the Nintendo version of the first release of Mortal Kombat had brown “blood” (so dirt/mud instead?), and Sega didn’t change and kept it red.

Just finished the book, pretty good read.

It was "sweat." Plus they also changed several of the fatalities, like Sub Zeros decapitation with spinal cord hanging down. It made the Sega version much more desirable.

Problem is most of them have a budget of about $100.

You had to know the ABACABB code before it enabled the blood on sega.
And by the time MK2 came around that was fixed for SNES, which both still felt more true to the arcade
game experience than any Sega version of it.
If not for that code they wouldn't have sold any copies of that game, and they knew it. So they added it.

I didn’t realize how much the PlayStation kicked Nintendo’s arse until the end of the doc.
I enjoyed both docs. I had the NES, then a genesis, then N64, then PS2. Then I pretty much stopped gaming. So both of These docs where right in my wheel house and very nostalgic. I guess the genesis advertising got me as an 11 year old, lol, as I remember my cousins all had super Nintendo’s.
My son is kinda getting to that age so will probably have the Nintendo switch before long.

The six button Genesis controller was a game changer. It made MK far superior to the SNES version. It was perfect for that game.

I forgot how genius Sega's marketing was.
I also didn't know just how much Sony destroyed Nintendo with the Playstation.
They never delved into just how Sony got the technology to beat the N64 so bad. They also didn't even mention the Dreamcast. By then, though, it was over for Sega. So I guess it didn't even matter.

I thought everyone knew this. It started out as a SNES CD upgrade like the Sega CD but then Nintendo and Sony couldn't get along so Sony did it on their own.

I wish there was a doc explaining why Coleco Vision collapsed.
I think it may have been just the "home video game recession" and why Atari collapsed. It took a few years for Nintendo to revive the boom.
We had the Atari 2600, Nintendo but Coleco Vision was by far the best console at the time, best graphics, problem is they didn't have enough games...so you could buy a port to plug into the system to play Atari games.
Also the controller was really bizarre. Looked like some futuristic portable phone.
But damn I loved that console over Atari and Nintendo and Sega.

Snes had 6 button if you include the bumpers

I hated Cleco Vision. I didn’t own one and always got my arse waxed in baseball because of those dumb controllers.

The controllers sucked.
But the graphics were as close as you could get to real Arcade. Dwarfed Atari.
I mean Zaxxon looked like the real version...while a ton of Atari games looked like crap compared to their Arcade versions.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System sold 49.1 million units, about 18 million more than Sega Genesis.
The stock swap deal valued Sega between $1.45 billion and $1.8 billion.
..and sega had a head start and lower price.
Nintendo's net worth is estimated to be more than $85 billion. It is also the third most valuable company in Japan.
Id say Nintendo won the frickin battle between them and sega.
