This is not the cut and dried absolute of human nature. We will crawl over one another to survive as will any animal. But if we are surviving at almost any level we will nurture those among us who are struggling. We will even sacrifice comforts when they are few and far between to help one another. Humans are social animals...we are concerned with the welfare of others. At the same time we will, in the direst of circumstances, kill and eat one another if necessary to survive. It is more inline with human nature to share willingly food beyond that which we need personally than it is to shoot a hungry man for taking food we do not need to sustain our own survival....that is learned behavior....instinctively we would allow that person what they needed, were it available, if we had what we needed.
