also, not dead set on south to north through that route. could do something like denver up to the badlands then across wyoming then up through idaho. That would show my boys some mountians for sure!

Not really. If you're going to be near there, maybe, but I wouldn't make any special trip for it.
But I've only been there one time way back in 1986. Even as a kid it was kind of a letdown.
