It’s not just poor people who receive 100s of billions, multi-billion dollar corporations do too, despite all the additional tax incentives, subsidies, irresponsible spending and 9 figure CEO salaries. It’s less shocking that the poor need a handout than the wealthy.

I actually don't mind the under 300 billion going towards food stamps and the like as long as it means people in this country don't starve, it seems like a very small price to pay compared to all the other things we throw away money on. Sure it probably gets abused but im also sure a lot of it does keep people from starving, which is a least a tangible result compared to where a lot of the money goes

Judging by this thread it seems to bother people a lot more because they see a few hundred dollars spent at the store whereas they don't see the billions being handed to corporations. Out of sight, out of mind. let's condemn the poor, thats how Jesus wouldve done it

Yeah, I don't love the SNAP abuse, but it isn't high on the list for me.

Of course it sucks to watch someone buying a basket of junk food, but the manpower required to closely control what people can buy would cost us more than just giving them the $200 and calling it a day. There's soooo much that would have to go into monitoring it.

And I mean, a lot of these people can't cook/won't cook/don't have the means to cook. So prepared foods, frozen meals, packaged foods, etc. are going to have to be allowed.

And that's not even bringing in allergies and things like that to the discussion, which you know would have to be observed.

I work in an industry based on feeding at-risk children, and there are parts of the country where the demographics are such that you can't sit there and avoid giving them the foods they will eat (pizza, burgers, etc). Those kids aren't exposed to that and will throw away the only meal they might get that day to keep from eating it.

I do agree that it would be nice for items like Starbucks drinks, energy drinks, candy, etc. to be refused.. but the execution of that would be difficult. There's a new candy/drink type deal released nearly every day.

Just easier to load the card with a dollar amount and not try to fund anything deeper to little end.

The irony is all that EBT money ends up right back in the hands of corporate America too, from Walmart to the big Ag companies.

It's always the middle class that gets squeezed in all this.

I would like to see it go away from EBT and buying whatever processed crap at the grocery store to only being able to buy real food like meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, etc. The whole point is so people don't starve, no reason that crap like pizza rolls are eligible. Oh, but there it is. Then some big food processing conglomerate wouldn't be in on the money train.

Everybody wins except the middle class. Just keeps getting squeezed.
