The Boys is not a show that the show runners want you to take too seriously, I feel like the whole gun thing is pretty funny everytime they do it. It's not like a "haha" funny, but just kinda a "you guys are constantly fighting against supes and you still haven't figured it out" or "you guys are the elite soldiers for Vaught and you STILL try to kill Homelander with gun..." type of dark humor. It's just another way there show runners remind us "if you are taking this story seriously, chill"
