What changed ? I mean, he could have done that any time, how did his situation alter all that much?

Did he just finally snap, now that he feels that he's basically alone ? No future with Stormfront, Maeve's betrayal complete, his kid taken, Becca dead ( not that he cared for her ).

He's been heading that way, he's been needing a female "handler". Mommy issues.
First it was Stilwell, then the guy doing the fake Stilwell (extraordinarily creepy), then Stormfront (of all the people you could ask for) is the one who reels him back in. I mean, she was toxic for sure, be he was actually healthy with her. He could get his kink on and not cause harm, he was quite frankly good with Ryan, and instead of torching Becca he was talking with her about things. He wanted to get his way, but he was trying to explain it too, and the concerns he raised were valid. He basically was saying "I don't want him to become another ME" to her.

That's all been snatched away from him, and it ain't coming back. He has nothing to care about, and no one to care for him anymore. And he's learned that being gentle (with the Ryan/Becca thing) only blew up instead.

Regarding the guns and their ineffectiveness, what else are you going to do? I mean, yeah, it's useless, but we'd all do a mag dump in the same situation. Or pick up a crowbar like Butcher. Better than go fetal and wait for it, might as well take a shot.
