that means I need to ride on a busy road at 5PM, that's where I'm going. My mode of transportation is no less valid than anyone else's,

But if it was illegal to do it, would you still do it?

If it was illegal to ride a bike on the same lanes that cars, trucks, 18 wheelers drive on, would you do it?

Heres another analogy:
If all drugs were legal - would you start shooting heroin? Its fricking legal. Its your right to do with your body what you please.
Its your body.

Ultimately that is the key. Barring any unexpected problem, I will reach 400,000 lifetime miles on a road bike next year. Outside banging and beating around with cars, cabs, trucks and pedestrians during the 2 summers I was a messenger in NYC I have never come in contact with a car. They do what they are supposed to do and I do what I am supposed to do along with trying to predict what dumb stuff they are about to do.

In the end, cycling is one of my safer hobbies though that could change on my ride I will start in a few minutes. I will say of all the states that I ride in LA is one with a higher percentage of near misses. Drivers just aren't used to bicycles and don't seem to know how to react to them.
