This is intentional. What else should we expect when there are so many fatherless homes because they're all locked up? The problem with these programs is a lot of them were arrested for non-violent drug charges, but they tack on these gun offenses just because they had one, on the basis that these people were potentially a violent threat. And then when/if they get out, their job prospects are limited due to their record, but they've made a whole lot of great new friends and picked up some great new skills.

We should definitely continue jailing the actually violent people, but we should probably stop jailing the non-violent ones, at least not for such long sentences on trumped-up gun charges when they didn't even use the gun. Because doing so guarantees the loss of any potential productivity and the possibility of building family wealth to break the cycle of crime. Spare me the "they would never amount to anything anyway" because most people have potential given the right guidance.
