Will we ever have a featured "go to" back at LSU?

This is not a negative post in any way, but all of the talk about our great RB's just has me thinking about it.

I can remember a few times over the last two seasons where we have had a RB get hot and have some good runs and then not see the field for the rest of the game.

It's been a long time since we had a featured back. Charles Alexander was one for a couple of years in the late 70s.

Hester was the featured back last year with quality backups.

Hester was the featured back last year; however, if you are actually asking "will LSU ever have a 20+ carry a game back ever again", then I think the answer is No.

I guess what I am getting at, is I hope to see more of Miles/Crowton going with the hot runner. If Murphy goes 5 runs for 80 yards and a score in the first half against Auburn, I hope he gets more than two carries in the second half.

I know the coach is always right and we should never doubt, but this makes for good discussion during this time of the year.

Why should we limit ourselves to the style of one back, when Crowton can use a few backs to cater to their strengths. I personally don't want one back to take 95% of the carries and then be tired in the fourth quarter when we really need him.

I think if you brought in a guy like Bryce Brown who has everything you'd want in a back then you may see it. I don't know too much about LSU's backfied except that everyone has one thing they're very good at. I just don't know if there is a complete back in the group who has it all.

I still don't think you should give 95% of the carries to a RB even if he is a complete back. You have to share the carries to keep everyone happy, and then you can always cater to their strengths (especially with the spread offense).

Your #1 back would have to be all-world for me to say give him all the carries.

This is a good thing first off. I think Faulk was our last go to guy. Since then either injury or quality of compititon has taken away the featured back for LSU. Toefield was supposed to be our guy, but couldn't stay healthy, then Davis did it but only after Toefield was hurt. Then it was supposed to be Addia, but he got hurt, then it was going to Vincent, then he loss his mojo or some shite. And now its quality compition. Neither back has had a chance to show what he could do with 20 carries b/c we have a handful of guys that need to see the ball.

Therefor the next couple years, no we will not see a featured back.

In their good years Cecil Collins and Aley Broussard were both featured backs. Then s--t happened.

we have backs that do everything good but the thing that sets them apart is that they do certain things great.. Joe Addai is about as complete as you could've asked for in a back but at the time he played we had a stable of backs that could do certain things exceptionally well so there was no reason to rely on just one running back

Yes, because injuries happen and at some point someone will have to step up.

It happened with Faulk and Collins (collins left and Mealy got carries, but Faulk was still the featured back) When Mealy left it was on Dominic Davis. Then Toe came in and was the guy and got hurt and DD took over. Addai and Hester have been the closest since.

If not having a featured back is a testimate to our recruiting base, then do we really want a featured back?

Addai was the last true feature back IMO

Hester was our 1 guy, but he wasn't what i would call our feature back, he was just our best all around back

In my opinion the only game in Addai's career at LSU that he was completely healthy was the Peach Bowl against Miami, and we saw what he did in that game.

The only way we get a "feature back" is if we get someone who is far and away better then the rest of our backs.

We would have to have a Ricky Williams, or Reggie Bush type of back to warrant that type of playing time. And it could be argued that Reggie wasn't even a feature back during his years at USC.

Obviously using multiple backs has worked out really well and they all seem to have their stregnths, but sometimes I wonder what a back like Keiland or Scott could do with a bunch of carries over the course of a game as far as getting into a really good rhythym, we may be surprised at what these guys could do when they get hot, I think sometimes splitting up the carries prevents this
