Yeah, if a judge pisses both sides off, then it’s probably a sign he’s doing a rather non-partial job.

That's how it's taken by the public, which burnishes the reputation of court, which is probably part of Roberts' motivation. The other part in this, rather than being blackmailed, is the movement in the court's docket this past term. It's not that Roberts "moved left", but that the cases "moved right".
