Garmin inReach: Anyone use

Saw this on one of the youtube videos my kids watch. It's basically a handheld gps transponder w/ satellite phone capability that sends your location out every 10 min and you can also text from or send SOS's. Anyone have any experience with this unit or a similar one?
I fish/boat a good bit with just my 7 and 6 yo sons (inshore, lakes, canals of SELA) so in case i become incapacitated in some way, this would ensure we could be located.
It's $12/month for the service + looks like $350 for the unit.
Am i overthinking this?

They are very popular out west on big game hunts. They also have a sat text feature which is good when cell signals suck.

Im heading to Colorado in October and may purchase this.
Never a bad thing to have on you especially if something happens.

I am in Alaska and have a personal one and then our office has a few that employees can check out and use. I prefer my own so I can have my personal waypoints, etc saved in them. They work great. I use the $25/ month option which gives me a little more opportunities to text (even though I have yet to need more than the minimum). Great battery life, you can bluetooth through your phone with an app. The I66 is the upgraded version and it easier to text, has better maps, etc. Many people here also use the smaller version (spot) and text blue tooth through there phones.
GAIA GPS app is also a great app to have if you want a map to use while out of service. Just cache the map before you go, but your phone in airplane mode, and it will continue to show where you are.
Inreach Training Webinar
Hopefully this link works here. It is a webinar they had with some training information.
One last piece of advice.. if you are tracking your trip for the purpose of getting back out the same way make sure you use the screen lock. Pretty scary feeling to get to the top of the mountain and realize it has stopped tracking and didn't save. Fortunately for me the shoreline was fairly easy to walk in this section so even though I ended up being a mile from the boat, it wasn't too much of an ordeal. I also create a way point now exactly where the boat is and at the point I come out of the treeline.

Colorado
I used one in Colorado last November. It worked great. I had no cell service where we camped. I used this to text my wife at night.
