What happens to Sports in General if ESPN Goes Bankrupt?
Nothing good. Access to watch will be more limited, at least for a while. Less money would be flowing into college sports, causing more programs to be cut. There would be some pretty bad outcomes.

Hopefully it would have a positive ripple effect that brings the astronomical salaries back down to earth. Maybe then attending sporting events would become affordable again.

ESPN is an antiquated "middle-man". The LEAGUES own the content (i.e. the games). ESPN just pays for the rights to broadcast them. The NFL, NBA, etc could cut ESPN out of the equation and produce/broadcast their content (via streaming service) themselves and take all the ad revenue that came with it. Plus, there are other networks CBS, NBC, FOX that could pick up the slack. Also, you are seeing Amazon, Apple, Facebook, etc trying to get into the game. Other than their documentaries (some are good); and talk shows - Sportscenter, NFL live, etc, etc. (continuously becoming irrelevant in the age of immediate information/highlights because of the internet) ESPN doesn't produce anything.
In short, if ESPN went away other broadcast mediums would pick of the slack. It might take a little bit of time, but, ultimately, we wouldn't miss ESPN.

IMO, this would be a good thing right now. College sports need a total reboot.
