Yeah, I've been to both many times and I'd rather live in NW Arkansas than California. I'd be mortgage poor in any desirable areas of California and I'd have to deal with their batshit crazy state politics. Hard pass.

We lived in Mountain Home when I worked for Baxter and loved the area. Almost all of Arkansas from Little Rock northward is very pretty with lots of outdoor stuff (Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking) to do. You can catch almost any freshwater fish you want in Northern Ark. The World Record Brown Trout likely was caught in the White River, about five miles below Bull Shoals Dam. I caught several 25 pound Stripers in Norfork Reservoir, with the record in that lake at 60+ pounds. It is a great place to raise kids. For the most part the people are folks you can get along with.
Unless you are into crowded, expensive places to buy a house and live, the Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers area is as nice as anywhere you might want to live.
