Well, I don't see how people agree that they aren't protecting you from breathing in the particles but they are protecting others from your expulsion of the particles. That makes no sense to me

Look at this simulation that aired on CNN. Masks can reduce how far particles travel when people cough or speak. It's the same reason people are taught to cough into their arms.
