Dr. Peter J. Hotez on How the Federal Government Failed Texas on the Coronavirus

If you aren’t familiar with Dr. Peter Hotez, he is well respected within the Texas Medical Center as one of the nation’s leading experts on drug and vaccine delivery, and is co-Director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital.

quote:
“What pushed my hand was the steep rise across our Southern cities, knowing that our low-income neighborhoods are especially getting hit, and, most likely, though the data isn’t in yet, it’s people of color, African American, Hispanic, and Latinx people that are piling into the hospital. So we are as a nation are failing to protect our vulnerable. And I reached a point where not being political, not really getting to the root of the problem, is in itself immoral
Social justice partisan hack moron.
Hit all the targets.
quote:
The strategy was just ‘let the states figure it out and the federal government will work to provide backup’—FEMA support, ventilator manufacturing, and PPE. But they didn’t provide clear-cut epidemiologic models on where each of the states was headed. They failed to provide clear information about what would happen if the states did nothing or if the states opened prematurely. They failed to tell the states, ‘This is what you need to do to save lives.’ And the reason they needed to do that was they were tone deaf to the fact that all of these governors, not just the Texas governor, are buffeted by forces to the left and right. And the governors needed the cover from the federal government to say, ‘Hey guys, look, I hear what you’re saying, but the CDC and the federal government is telling me if I don’t do X, Y, and Z, this many lives are going to be lost.’ And that would have given a lot of the governors a lot of cover to do what needed to be done. And so I place the blame squarely in the hands of the government and CDC for not being proactive and out there in the lead.”
Bald faced liar.
Also, because the opportunity presented itself, Texas monthly is a regressive trash periodical

I respect his position. I respect the difficult conditions to which the healthcare system has been subjected.
But, frankly, it is just wrong across the board. The Federal government has virtually no responsibility (and should have little to none) for healthcare.
Historically, the VA system has been a laughingstock (Better than nothing? Not always.) and the military healthcare system isn't all that better. What bolsters the latter is that military age folks are largely young and fit, relative to their civilian counterparts.
Now, having said that, Federal action on COVID was rapid and revolutionary. Trump oversaw a literal paradigm shift in how we test for pandemics in just a few short weeks. Mobilized the "whole of government" approach, instead of letting the CDC futz around for months (as they would have) before throwing up their hands.
No one is perfect and many of the early missteps were done with good intentions (IMHO), but just on a lack of information.
Contrast this at how governors failed by stuffing actively sick Wuhan patients into nursing homes where they knew, almost to a certainty, those patients would spread the disease, in that environment to the absolutely most vulnerable among us.
Contrast that to how local officials, while blithely okay with BLM and Antifa protests, tried to ban whole swaths of economic activity (i.e. people's livelihoods) and even recreational activity, like being outside in the sunshine and fresh air where the virus almost certainly cannot spread, and the more recent clamp down on "mask deniers."
So, with all due respect to Dr. Hotez, he's full of shite and should focus on treating people, not federal policy. If he wants to stand for office, this is still a free country (for a little while longer) and he should do so.

Take a drive through south Dallas today. See how many people of the A.A. and Latino communities are adhering to the guide lines of wheels Abbott and Nazi Jenkins.
If these people are at most risk, why isn't nazi Jenkins on every radio/tv station in the Dallas area everyday? Why isn't the local health administration out in these communities everyday?
Because they are incapable of listening to reason AND the local media would rather preach about OBM.
Do you want another shut down Pooka?

People living with large multi-generational families run a high risk of exposing the old folks.
People who's skin doesn't produce much vitamin D are at higher risk since vitamin D deficiency can make coronavirus more severe. Darker skin helps prevent sunburn, but also doesn't produce as much vitamin D.
There are many cultural factors involved.

The same thing is happening in Houston. Businesses that were adhering to guidelines got lumped in with night clubs catering to young minority folk who were still dancing and crowding in the bar.

No need to misrepresent what my position is.
I just want whatever is best for schools to be open and fall sports to exist.
And it sounds like right now the current lack of a plan is preventing that from being possible.

No, you want shutdowns to help your political party. It’s very clear. Pretending you want tens of thousands of people located on campuses or college sports is far more reckless than having open businesses makes no sense.

Let me be more clear. I want to see the cases trending down consistently so that schools can open safely.
Posted on 7/10/20 at 12:32 pm to Pooka
They’d trend right back up as soon as you put 60,000 people on LSU’s campus everyday. Then they’d trend again state wide during Thanksgiving when everyone went home.
Measuring this thing by “cases” is retarded

Then advocate for fixing the God damned tests or at least counting false positives correctly.
