When YouTube signed the original contract with CBS it was before their merger with Viacom. I read an article a couple of months ago that ViacomCBS was demanding these 8 channels be included in the new contract and wouldn't come off that position. Clearly YouTube caved and now they are going to pay for it in losing subscribers.

I know that content costs keep rising but I have another theory. Amazon said earlier this week that are considering a live TV streaming service. If they offer one I expect some downward pressure on pricing. It may be that Google/YouTube is trying to make some cash before Amazon jumps in.
