Receiver/cable box/TV setup

Gents - recently got a new Samsung TV and a Denon receiver.
Hooked up the cable box to the receiver and then to the TV and the sound works great. However, when I use the apps (Prime or Netflix) on the standalone apps, the receiver doesn't pick up the sound, only the TV speakers.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong? TIA!

How are you using the apps? From the TV? If so, you need an HDMI cable from the TV to the receiver and set the TV audio up to output and disale the internal speakers.

The one (app) through the cable box (Netflix) works just fine with the receiver.
THe one (app) through the Samsung TV won't work through the receiver.

quote:Yeah, like VABuckeye said, you have to feed the TV audio back to the receiver. Look for an HDMI port on the back of the TV labeled "ARC". Or the TV likely has other types of audio output that the receiver can handle, as well.

When you run an app on the cable box, the signal goes cable box -> receiver -> TV. The receiver gets the audio and video, sends the audio to your speakers, and video to the TV. All is good. When you run an app on the TV, as of now the TV doesn't "know" that it's hooked to the receiver, and it has no way to send audio to it. The receiver can't "intercept" the audio and handle it, so you need to pipe the TV audio output back to the receiver input. Or, you could just forget about the TV apps and use a roku/firetv/whatever media stick hooked up to another input on the receiver.

I have all of my devices plugged into my TV, then use the ARC HDMI from the TV to my receiver. It was easier to teach my wife that she only had to mess with the TV remote.

Yes, the WAF is a consideration for some of us.

If your gear has the ports then try connecting the TV (out) to the receiver (in) with an optical cable.
