Because if it wasn’t signed and the court said St. George is legit then a certain amount of taxes could not be collected by the parish or St. George. You know they weren’t going to let that happen. They have to take our money one way or the other.

He had three options
Sign the bill into law
Veto the bill
Do nothing and the bill would become law without his sig.

I believe he chose the first option because he didn’t want to be labeled as going against a lawful election especially when his opponents could override a veto and post it up.
