Let’s modify this and see how it works:

They were fighting over enslaving human beings. There was no “in the middle”.

You might want to remember that Soviets were Allies & rethink this.

There’s also the fact that the Jefferson Davis statue - like many Confederate statues - was erected in the 1910s, about 45 years after the Civil War and smack in the midst of the Jim Crow era. I wonder why that is? Or if there are any statues of Confederate war hero James Longstreet in New Orleans?

Reason for the War Between the States:
1. States' rights
2. Unfair taxation upon the Southern states
I don't know how old you are but I think I learned a different American History than you did.
The war wasn't completely about slavery.
In the 1860s, men were more loyal to their home state than their country. That's why Robert E. Lee joined the Army of Northern Virginia. In 2020, it would be like you defending your family's estate and protecting your family from an aggressor invading your property, only on a larger scale.
I have a relative that was a POW in the war between the states. He was a Confederate soldier defending his property in his state.
You can't just make a blanket statement that it was all about enslaving human beings because it wasn't.
It was about money and power. Lincoln taxing the South. Lincoln stating that the states couldn't secede which would diminish his power.
It was a multifaceted complicated situation and to simply say it was all about slavery is wrong.
I took a lot of History classes in college. Did you?
