Southern Utah (Campervan)

With all the Utah discussion lately I am in the beginning stages of planning a trip in late September this year. I was planning on renting a campervan in Vegas and heading out to Zion and Bryce for 5 days. Has anyone done this before? Any information is appreciated.

We did that trip last year. Check the RV campsites at or near the parks now! Limited RV parking at the Park sites so go early. Some of the prettiest country you will see.

Sunrise at Point Imperial

Day 1: We flew into Las Vegas And picked up our camper van around noon. After grabbing some groceries in St. George Utah we made it all the way to the north rim of the Grand Canyon to camp. Dispersed camped Outside the park a couple miles in the Kaibab national forest.
Day 2: Sunrise at Point Imperial and traveling along Cape Royal road for most of the day. We did a few short hikes but overall just enjoyed the views. One thing I will say is how small the crowds were. The North Rim only gets 10% of the visitors the South Rim gets per year...

Areas of the Kaibab were burnt pretty bad but didnt have an signs near the Rim.

Day 3: After spending the night in the Kaibab (dispersed camped again) we drove through the Vermillion Cliffs to Marble Canyon where we spent the day kayaking the Colorado River from Horseshoe Bend Kayak Horseshoe Bend (roughly 9 miles and the current is about 3.5mph). It was absolutely stunning and one of the highlights of the trip. We also did a little side hike about halfway down called Waterholes Canyon. Afterwards, we drove into Page, Az and saw Horseshoe Bend from above. We then camped at the Wahweap campground (Wife needed a shower

Day 4: We had a great breakfast in Page, Az at the Ranch House Grille before heading out towards Bryce Canyon NP. We stopped and spent a few hours hiking Buckskin Gulch since the Navajo Reservation was closed due to COVID 
. I am actually thankful that it was closed as Buckskin (longest slot canyon in the world I believe) was unbelievable.

Day 5-6: We had a full day at Bryce Canyon NP and started it off with Sunrise at Inspiration Point (Bryce point the next morning) which was unreal. This was our favorite part of the trip. We then made sure to hit up the Navajo Loop and combined it with Peek-a-boo loop. I definetly recommend getting below the rim of the canyon in this park. It is well worth it.

Day 6: After sunrise at Bryce we made the short drive to Zion NP (90 mins). We got to our campsite by lunch and then caught the shuttle up the Canyon to the Grotto Stop for Angel's Landing (we got lucky and it was the 1st day the chain section was opened since COVID began). It was a tough hike and very hot as we were in the sun a lot (best done in the AM or late evening) but worth it at the top.

Day 7: We had to do the Narrows while in Zion. It is well worth it and September is a great time to visit as the water level is low. I'd recommend planning on a good 6 hours so you can get away from the crowds and pass further into the canyon. I also recommend the boot/hiking pole for the outfitters in town (worth the 50$ not to bust your butt on a slick rock).

Day 8: We drove back to Vegas and spent the night before flying out the next day. Disappointed the shows were not going on and surprised at all the LA folks and amount of weed in the air.
