It wasn't black socks.

The DB's apparently thought it would be cool to completely wrap their socks with black tape. It caused an uproar and it never happened again.

I remember Curley saying on the radio show that he ordered the Equipment Manager to remove all the black tape from the locker room. (The black tape, as bad as it looked, still looked better than the current god awful purple leggings and purple shoes. )
