The reason that Germany paid reparations to Israel at all was that Israel resettled about 500,000 Holocaust survivors (at a cost of $3,000 each or about 27,000 in today’s money), for a total of 1.5 billion dollars then (or about 13 billion dollars in today’s money. Israel also estimated that Germany had stolen about 6 billion dollars in property ( or 63 billion in today’s money) belonging to deceased Jews (of which the state of Israel should be the heir). So together, about 76 billion dollars in today’s money.
