I took it as the "make up" for leaving out the hate crime/murder of the gay guy in the 1958 portion of the book. Two gay guys in 1958 go out to the fair and are gay bashed and thrown over a bridge. The one guy is killed by It and the way the murder was handled was probably very accurate for 1958 but would have caused boycotts in todays movie audience.
