And the owners coming back and saying “hold on, we’re not paying you for services not rendered” doesn’t make them greedy either.

Maybe not, but if they cancel the season so players don't render services, it should be fairly clear who's responsible for no baseball.

The sides have a contract that governs playing. If the owners don't want baseball under the existing contract, the lack of baseball's on them.

Literally no one is asking the owner to pay players for services not rendered. Not the fans, not the media and not the players.
They’re asking the opposite actually.

They’ve already prorated their salaries to the amount of games played. After agreeing to this the owners are now saying “welllll it doesn’t look like we’ll make quite as much money now so we think we should pay you much less than your actual worth”

The owners are trying to make sure they suffer no losses while everyone else pays the price for it.
