I've had all sorts. Different coolers for different uses. I buy he best I can for durability and effectiveness. I'm all about convenience now too. Wheels and backpacks are my thing now.
I'm a bit of a cooler addict though. Every time I go into a sporting goods store, I cannot resist going down the cooler aisle.
These days my needs are travel, fishing and hurricane prep.
Fishing demands keeping fish on ice for days at a time. I generally steer clear of soft shell casing when fishing.
Soft-shell; The Yeti's I have are very durable. The soft shell versions are durable and seem to be more effective than other soft shells that I have but not sure worth he money. Rtic makes great soft shells imo and cheaper.
Hardshell/Rotomolded; Igloo makes a hard shell and it's darn good for half the price. One of them has wheels so I love that. The MaxCold by Igloo is hands down the best cooler for the money but it's shell will split over time. If going offshore for long periods or if a hurricane is coming - The Yeti Tundra is the best hands down for keeping stuff cold longterm. There's something called Lifetime at Walmart that looks really nice and I've heard good things. The Rtic makes the biggest Rotomolded model.
Overall brand favorite;
Rtic is probably my favorite brand. Never had a problem. They have a really good backpack cooler. Love the zippers.

I have an Rtic soft sided cooler for mid-size and love it. The strap is pretty comfortable and we use it for tailgating, drinks while fishing, parties, etc.
My large ice chest is a Coleman for like $50 and it's been great too so
