This is the how.
The why is he was one of the biggest douche bags to ever skate in the NHL. An epic attention whore and a lousy human being (he killed a woman while driving drunk). A role player on the ice and a nothing as a coach.
But had he ever put on a helmet no one would have ever known/remembered his name.
